Why Backup Data?


Q: Why should my business backup its data?
A. Your data is crucial to your business. Without it, you no longer have a client contact list, financial information or application critical information. If you were to lose your data, it would more than likely take one or more employees up to two weeks to re-enter. This obviously in not an attractive scenario.

Q: I only use my computer at home. Why do I need to backup my data?
A. Data loss can occur due to a power outage, fire or hard drive crash. Data loss can mean disaster. It can mean hours of frustration, costly replacement, and significant revenue loss. Nearly one in four computers has lost content to hackers, viruses, blackouts, or electrical failure, and more than two thirds of computer users fear data loss to viruses or hackers, according to a survey by Bruskin Research. Sixty nine percent of business computer users back up their data less than once a month if ever.

Laptop Loss

Of the 2.3 million insurance claims for computer loss in 2001, 23% were theft-related; notebook theft has increased by 53% SINCE 2000. (Safeware, The Insurance Agency Inc. 2001)

• Due to a laptop’s portability, they are more susceptible to loss, theft or damage. As a result, the need for an automated system of repair and recovery of data is essential for remote and mobile users.

• A virus, if undetected, will end up infecting all of your backup tapes and disks.

• Whether your backup tape or disk will restore in an emergency Perhaps you back up your business data on tapes or CDs, but technology has long since made these modes of backup obsolete. They’re costly and cumbersome, require dedicated IT staff to administer -- and eventually fail.
• Any theft of backup tapes or zip disks, will result in someone having access to all your data, since these tapes and disks are not encrypted.
• Any corruption of your data files will end up corrupting your backup.
• Nearly 40% of all backup tapes used would not restore data correctly when needed in a system emergency.
